Ademola Lookman matched two of Finidi George’s long-standing records at the Estadio de la Cartuja, but it was not enough to give Atletico Madrid the win.
The London-born forward became the second Nigerian, after Finidi, to play in the final of the Copa del Rey and also find the back of the net.
Real Sociedad went in front in the first minute of the game, after Ander Barrenetxea scored the opener for the Basque club.
However, Lookman rose to the occasion by scoring the equalizer 17 minutes later with a composed low finish after being set up by Antoine Griezmann.

The 2024 CAF Player of the Year nearly provided an assist for Griezmann in the 31st minute after laying a smart pass to set him up, but the World Cup winner missed the target.
Despite his efforts, Diego Simeone’s side went behind on the stroke of halftime, with Mikel Oyarzabal converting from the spot after Guedes won a penalty.
Lookman’s numbers in Atletico’s loss
Starting to become a norm, the Argentine manager subbed off Lookman in the 60th minute or thereabouts for the 7th time this season.
Very late in the game, the Los Colchoneros equalized through Julián Álvarez, dragging the game into extra time.
The unexpected would eventually happen as the Txuri-urdin defeated Atletico 4-3 on penalties.
Lookman was electric on the night, recording one key pass, 85% pass accuracy, 3 shots and a goal that saw him follow in the footsteps of Finidi.
Finidi scored in the 1997 final for Real Betis against Barcelona, and he also finished on the losing side.
Up next for Lookman and Atletico is a UEFA Champions League semifinal clash with Arsenal.
