Often called Champions League royalties, Real Madrid have competed in well over 40 UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, and regardless of their domestic form, they know how to turn up in this competition.

This season has, however, not been the best for them, but they have still found themselves in the last eight of Europe’s premier club competition.

A 5-1 win on aggregate over Manchester City in the round of 16 set up Alvaro Arbeloa’s side with five time-winners Bayern Munich.

Madrid go into this clash knowing that an exit from the competition means there is a likelihood of going trophyless this season.

The Galaticos trail rivals, FC Barcelona by 7 points in the domestic league and have already been eliminated from the Copa del Rey.

But all hope will be on Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Jr to unsettle the defence of the Bavarians, who are unbeaten in this season’s Champions League.

The visitors, on the other hand, boast of a well-rounded forward line that has seen goal contributions shared.

Luis Diaz has 22 goals and 18 assists; Michael Olise has 16 goals and 28 assists, while Harry Kane boasts of 48 goals and 5 assists.

A fun fact is that each of the trio had once played in the Premier League at some point in their career.

Going into the game, the visitors have just lost two games out of the 43 played this season, with the losses coming against Augsburg in the Bundesliga and a 3-1 loss to Arsenal in the UCL league phase.

In the last round, a 10-2 win over Italian side Atalanta was enough to see them book a 29th and 30th meeting with Real Madrid.

If we are being fetishistic, we can as well say this fact that four out of Madrid’s 15 Champions League titles were won after they had gone past the German giants in the last eight.

Match Prediction

Real Madrid’s home and away thrashing of English giants Manchester City was a statement making one, that they can show up in this competition even if they are terrible elsewhere.

Bayern are a very strong team, but at the Santiago Bernabeu it will be very hard to defeat Madrid as the hosts will fancy their chances of winning.

Numbers reveal that this will be a high scoring game because, in 83% of Bayern’s last six away games over 2.5 goals have been recorded.

The hosts have also recorded over 2.5 goals scored in their last three games across all competitions.
