Can bottling Arsenal survive a visceral Sporting Lisbon nightmare?

Arsenal’s dream of ending their six-year run without a trophy might not be coming to a glorious end after getting eliminated from the FA Cup on Saturday night.

The Gunners have now lost two trophies in the last two games played, losing two-nil in the Carabao Cup final before the international break and now exiting the FA Cup in the quarter-final following a 2-1 loss to the Saints.

An upset was far-fetched due to Arsenal’s exploits this season; betting sites placed them as favourites before the game, but the tables turned.

What’s next for crumbling Arsenal?

As a result of this, Mikel Arteta’s side only have the Premier League and UEFA Champions League to fight for.

Arsenal, as of the 5th of April 2026, have played 31 games, recording 21 wins, 7 draws and 3 losses that have given them a total of 70 points.

With these 70 points accrued is a title race with rivals Manchester City, who have played 30 games and are 9 points away.

Only the Cityzens look like they can match up with Arsenal in these final games, and rivals are putting their hopes in them to stop the 13-time league champions from winning their first league title in 22 years.

We had likened Arsenal’s season to that of Liverpool previously, where the Reds won the League Cup and FA Cup only after bottling the league and exiting the UEFA Champions League.

However, both titles have now left the London side’s hands, although they can still do a double.

In the UEFA Champions League this week, Arsenal take on Sporting Lisbon in the last eight’s first leg at Estádio José Alvalade.

It’s double-legged, and if they do advance, a semi-final clash with either Atletico de Madrid or FC Barcelona awaits.

Sporting vs Arsenal Betting Trends

This is the club’s third consecutive season in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, with the Gunners getting as close as the semis last season.

Undoubtedly their aim this term is to win, as they are amongst the big boys in Europe’s premier competition.

The road to winning is, however, not exactly straightforward; first, they have to face Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.

Here are some betting trends of both teams, and don’t forget to check out the best Free Bets & Betting Offers, courtesy of Free Bets Ng.

  • Sporting Lisbon have been in great form in their last 44 games across all competitions securing 30 victories.
  • In their head-to-head encounters, the hosts have yet to record a win against Arsenal, securing 3 draws out of the 5 matches played.
  • The North-London side have recorded 4 wins in their last 5 away fixtures in the Champions League.
  • Sporting’s last 6 home Champions League games have produced a minimum of three goals

Match Prediction

There is a whole lot of history between both sides, with the Gooners remembering how Sporting knocked them out of the 2022/2023 Europa League round of 16 on penalties.

The last time they met was in the Champions League, where the Gunners secured an emphatic 5-1 win in the 2024 league phase.

Having looked at the statistics and squad quality of both sides, one can’t conveniently pick an outright winner in 90 minutes.

Both sides have been scoring lately and even conceding, so over 2.5 goals scored is the best option.
