Onuachu: Meet the 20-goal Nigerian striker making history in Turkey

Paul Onuachu continues to give Nigerian football fans a lot of reasons to keep an eye on Trabzonspor games.

On Monday night at the Kadir Has Stadium, the lanky Super Eagles striker put up another perfect display, scoring a brace as Trabzonspor defeated Kayserispor 3-11 in the Turkish Super Lig.

Onuachu struck twice in the closing moments of the first half, first rising highest to head home a Wagner Pina cross before calmly converting a penalty five minutes later.

Last night was yet another reminder of his lethal presence in the box, and with this scoring run he is showing no signs of slowing down.

Fans and punters in Nigeria are increasingly tuning in to Trabzonspor matches all because of the former Southampton man.

Onuachu’s Streak and Trabzonspor’s Season

Onuachu has put what happened to him at Southampton some seasons ago in the past and has made Turkey his feasting ground.

His brace against Kayserispor was not just about securing three valuable points for Trabzonspor. It also extended an incredible run that has now seen the Nigerian striker score in seven consecutive Turkish Super Lig matches.

During that run, Onuachu has found the back of the net against Kasimpasa, Antalyaspor, Samsunspor, Fenerbahçe, Gaziantep FK, Fatih Karagümrük and now Kayserispor.

Nine goals have come from those seven games alone, showing just how prolific the 31-year-old has been in front of goal.

This kind of consistency is not new for the former Genk striker because this run equals the longest scoring streak of his professional league career, a record he first set during the 2020/21 season in Belgium with the Smurfs.

Monday’s goals have also put him into Trabzonspor folklore that has Burak Yilmaz.

The last player to score in seven straight league matches for the club was Yılmaz, who got the feat between December 2011 and January 2012.

The Nigerian striker has now bagged 20 league goals and two assists in just 22 appearances, making him the most important player in Trabzonspor’s attack.

His physical dominance, aerial ability and composure inside the penalty area have made him almost impossible to handle for defenders.

Since arriving at Papara Park, the Nigerian has played 50 matches across all competitions, scoring 39 goals and registering six assists.

That level of productivity highlights the massive influence he has had on the club’s attacking identity.

In a league that has elite attacking talent, Onuachu currently sits comfortably at the top of the Turkish Super Lig scoring chart.

Istanbul Başakşehir striker Eldor Shomurodov follows with 16 goals, while Galatasaray star Mauro Icardi sits on 13. Fenerbahçe’s Anderson Talisca has also scored 13 goals, with teammate Marco Asensio contributing 11.

Even fellow Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who has been impressive for Galatasaray this season, currently sits on 11 goals.
